PRESS RELEASE

2175 (ROLLS-ROYCE) AIR CADETS AWARDED £300 GRANT

LOCAL air cadets from Hillington in Renfrewshire were presented with a grant of £300 from their namesake, Rolls-Royce plc on the14th January 2003. The squadron has been linked with Rolls-Royce since 1946 with many of the cadets successful in serving apprenticeships with the company. This grant has been awarded to assist the cadets in purchasing equipment for the expeditions section of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme. Cadets will now be able to borrow expensive equipment such as tents, stoves and rucksacks, eliminating the need for private purchase.

The squadron were nominated for the grant by Civilian Instructor Steven Sim (23) from Crookston, who is also the Delegated Calibration Authority at Rolls-Royce Hillington. Mr Sim, who completed his Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award with the squadron said, “I gained so much out of completing the award, including confidence, a sense of adventure and teamwork, that I wanted all cadets at the squadron to have the opportunity to take part, regardless of personal finances.”

The cheque was presented by Mr Ian MacDonald, Quality Assurance Manager at Rolls-Royce Hillington, who is also the Chairman of the squadron’s Civilian Committee. The cheque was accepted on behalf of the squadron by Sgt Michael Little (17) and Cpl Elizabeth Brad (16).

Sgt Little, from Penilee has been with the squadron for 4 years. He has attended numerous camps and represents Glasgow and West of Scotland Air Cadets at Football and Athletics. Cpl Brad, from Kilmacolm, has been with the squadron for two years and has completed the Nijmegen International marches and represented Glasgow and West of Scotland Air Cadets at Netball and Hockey.

The squadron wishes to thank Rolls-Royce plc for their support of the squadron and hope that we continue to have a close relationship in the years to come.
