PRESS RELEASE LOCAL AIR CADETS STRIKE GOLD A four man team from 2175 (Rolls-Royce) Squadron and 912 (Helensburgh) Squadron, both from Glasgow & West Scotland Wing, of the Air Training Corps traveled to the Isle Of Man to complete the Expedition Section of their Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award on the 8th – 13th July 2003. Their exploration of the Isle was the first Gold Hike to be undertaken by 2175 (Rolls-Royce) Squadron in over a decade and is the first of many on a new start at undertaking the top level in the award scheme. Cadets Corporal Joseph Muir, Flight Sergeant Robert Hastie and Civilian Instructor (CI) Steven Sim of the Hillington based squadron and Cadet Warrant Officer Ewan Brae (from Helensburgh) started the planning and training for the Exploration in January. This involved a practice hike in the Loch Tay area of Scotland in June. The group walked a total distance of 85km on the Island traveling through Wild Country. They explored many points of interest including the Isle of Man Parliament and the Laxey Water Wheel. Luckily the great weather held up for the team and they completed the exploration with high morale as everyone coped well with the challenge. CI Steven Sim said “the hike was a tremendous success and the group can hold their heads up with pride as they are leading the way forward for other cadets at the squadron to follow”.
