Skiing

By Cdt Chris McKenzie

On the 8th of March Cadets Mckenzie and Mckenzie (F), Fox, Hastie, Kelly and Gillespie went to Aviemore on a skiing trip. We all had to be up really early and be at the squadron for 6.15am! Then we spent ages on the bus to Aviemore but it wasn't that bad because we watched Mr beans Holiday on DVD.

We arrived about 9am and got ready to hit the slopes. It was raining so we were all really disappointed but when we got to the top of the mountain range it wasn't raining, it was snowing!

We all received lessons except Cdt Kelly and Sgt Gladwell because they knew how to ski. The instructor taught us how to ski properly and how to turn and break. After lunch we found a great patch to have a snowball fight.

On the way back we stopped in Aviemore to go to the Chippie and then we watched in fantastic Four which was bad, in my opinion. We arrived back at the squadron at 8.30pm and went home. We had a great time, the snowball fight was definitely the best bit.

Swimming Proficiencies

By Cdt John Porter

On the 4th of April, myself and Cdt Kayani (QA), Cadet Warrant Officer Kayani, Cdt fox, the Mckenzies and the Montgomerys met up with CI Paula Hastie at the Paisley lagoon pool at 6 'o clock to get our basic swimming proficiency. When we got in the pool, we were called individually to the deeper end of the pool to be examined for the swimming proficiency. To accomplish this you had to swim 2 lengths of the pool (100 metres) without rest, you had to tread water for two minutes without rest and exit the pool without aid. Fortunately, we all passed with flying colours and we got to go down the flume before being changed again. We received our swimming proficiency certificate on the next parade night.

Wing Athletics

By Cpl Peter Hastie

Early one Saturday morning in April, myself, Sgt Kayani, Cdt Kayani QA, Cdt McKenzie, Cdt McKenzie (f), Cdt Montgomery and Cdt Montgomery (f) met at the Squadron to travel down to Ayr to take part in this year’s Wing Athletics. I was competing class B boys (15-17) Shot put, 400m and 800m.

When we arrived at the running track the sun was just starting to peek through the clouds and it looked to be a good day for Athletics. After getting changed, going over the running order for the day and catching up with cadets from other squadrons we went for a warm up to ensure that we were ready for the hard day ahead. The sun stayed out for the morning. Unfortunately, as myself and Sgt Kayani were competing in the boys Class B, we had not yet ran in a single race.

After lunch I was finally up and I was called to the starting place of the Boys 400m (one lap of the track). After the first turn I started to fall behind but seeing this I pushed myself with a 200m sprint at the end and just came in second qualifying for the 400m finals. Without time to catch a breath I was called to the shot put where I unfortunately made the mistake of walking out from the front of the throwing area to collect the shot and so disqualifying myself. After the shot put I went back to where the rest of the squadron was seated for a quick break before being called for the 400m final. This time I got off to a better start and finished just short of the podium in 4th place. Then, once again without a break, I was called to my final event, the 800m. By this time I was spent but I gave it a good try anyway. Despite falling behind in the first 400m I quickly got in to 3rd and I then pushed home the advantage with a last 100m sprint booking my place on the podium. As is usual at the end of wing Athletics we had got changed back in to our uniforms and had a final parade. After this we had just enough time for a Squadron photo before going home.

In the end we won 2 medals - 1 bronze for the 800m class B Boy, won by myself and 1 silver medal for the class A boys long jump for Cadet Jack Montgomery who when on to represent the Wing at the Regional Athletics. Hopefully next year with a bigger team we will win even more medals

CLIC Sargeant

By Chris McKenzie

Cpl Kelly and Cdt Gillespie, Fox and myself went to Drumpellier Country Park and raised money for the charity CLIC Sargent. We did Canoeing, Orienteering and Leadership Exercises.

First we did orienteering, it was Ok. We then did raft building. We had a kayak, a canoe, string and poles. We were to use the kayak to balance the canoe so it didn’t tip. We were the only people who had done it under the 30 min time limit. We then did a leadership exercise where we had to use planks of wood to cross an imaginary river. We did it eventually but we were way over the time limit. We then got burgers for lunch - they were tasty.  After that we did rock climbing, which wasn’t a task. A man brought it for us to try. Then they told us who had won, we didn’t win, but we enjoyed it anyway.
