January / February 2008 Gliding Scholarship By Cpl Zain Kayani On the 6th of January 2008 Cpl Falconer and myself had the privilege to attend a gliding scholarship at ACCVGS Syerston. Also attending from our Wing was Cdt Thomas Trevorrow whom we met on the long 6 hour journey. We arrived at RAF Cranwell which was to be our accommodation and met another 3 cadets from Edinburgh Wing. We were on time and so got ourselves unpacked, then we got changed and attended our first briefing. Cpl falconer was lucky and was to glide in a Vigilant, which has an engine. Whereas I did mine in the usual Viking with the cable launch. After our training we all sat an exam and I scored the highest mark with 25/30. Due to bad weather we didn't complete the required number of flights to complete the scholarship but we had a great time going out, playing pool, bowling and most importantly making friends and having a blast! We have been called back to finish our courses in march and hopefully this time we shall return with silver wings. I would 10/10 recommend this to anyone as it was a great experience and it is a wonderful qualification to add to your CV. So, if you do have the chance to do your gliding scholarship, most definitely do it. Remember have a blast. By Cdt Fraser Gillespie
At about 12 we went out in the land rovers, me and Hastie took a glider each to the runway, after that we prepped the gliders. Cdt Ansel went up first then I went up but about half way up the cable broke. After my three flights I helped the other cadets and pilots get the gliders ready for the next flights. Cdt Hastie went up 5 times for GIC 3, myself and Cdt Ansel had 3 flights for GIC 1, Cdt Bagnall had 4 flights for GIC 2,but the pilots forgot about Cdt Montgomery who only got 1 flight and didn't get GIC 1. Afterwards we took the gliders back to the hanger and we went back to the base and watched the rest of the movie. At about 5.30 Mr Hastie picked us up and dropped us off. After speaking to the cadets that came with us they all said they had a great day. By Cdt John PorterOn February 16th myself, ICWO Kayani, Cpl falconer, Cpl Kayani, Cadets Kayani, Bagnall, Hastie and Kelly arrived at Tradeston ex-serviceman's club at 11.45am, along with Fg Off Callan and Sgt Gladwell. Our first job was to welcome the guests by forming a guard of honour and coming to attention as they entered. It was tough because it was quite cold but we received many compliments on how smart we looked. After that we lined up to march inside the hall where the guests were now seated. There wasn't much room in the hallway so myself and the CWO were actually in the toilet! It was all worth it though as we marched through proudly. The guests applauded which was so noisy I couldn't hear the command to "Halt!" and cringed as I banged into the cadet in front. Finally we served the food to the guests and I used it as an opportunity to talk to the veterans. We than had some food and got the chance to meet some of the VIPs including Ian Davidson MP, Mohammad Sawar MP and the Secretary of State for Defence Des Brown MP, who we got our picture taken with. We had a great laugh and I enjoyed the day. The veterans were great to talk to and I hope to go again some day. By
Cdt Kirti Ansel On the 9th of February 2008, 8 cadets visited Glasgow airport to go flying on a Tutor aircraft. The cadets were taken way for the morning, and had the chance to experience flying in a Tutor aircraft. Each cadet was in the air for around 30 minutes. For some cadets it was their first experience, and if you were to ask them how it was they would definitely say it was a wonderful experience and that they would like to go again!! |
