MacPherson Awards Ceremony

2175 (Rolls-Royce) Squadron held their annual “MacPherson Awards” ceremony at Our Lady & St George’s Chapel Hall on the 16th of December 2005. The awards are given to the most deserving cadets who have demonstrated their abilities throughout the past year. The evening is the highlight of the calendar for the cadets who are rewarded for their dedication, skills and achievements in areas such as sports, drill, leadership and training.

The event was attended by our Wing Staff Officer Flt Lt Sneider, ex-Commanding Officers Flt Lt Gregor Brad and Flt Lt Cameron Brown, Mrs Ann McConnell and Brian McConnell, ex-squadron adjutant Flg Off Vicki Anderson, Mr Peter Sherard from the Rolls-Royce Heritage Trust and 602 Museum Association, Mr Pear - Head teacher of Paisley Grammar School, Mr Corrigan - Head teacher of Lourdes Secondary School, as well as  the cadets’ parents and families.

The evening was hosted by Flight Lieutenant Graham Short who said, “This has been one of the hardest years in the squadrons history, with the move from our home of 27 years at the gates of Rolls-Royce Hillington into temporary accommodation. Despite this, our cadets have shown the utmost commitment, hard work and positive attitude in order to ensure that they and the squadron continues to excel and set the standard for other ATC units to follow.”

The most coveted trophy among the cadets is the “Cadet of the Year” Trophy, which for the second year in a row was awarded to Sgt Hussain Kayani. Hussain has been a cadet with the squadron for over 4 years, achieving a Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, a Level 3 Gliding Induction Course and passes with credit in all his exams during his time as an air cadet. He recently achieved Staff Cadet and attended camp at RAF Gibraltar. He achieved 5 Highers this year and  hopes to serve in the RAF as a medic. This year held double success for the Kayani family with Hussain’s brother, Zain winning the “Junior Cadet of the Year” trophy.

The squadron is now looking forward to another very successful year in 2006.

Flying

By Cpl Steven Smith

On the 9th of November, Cpl Finnie, Cdt Kayani, Cdt Hawthorne and myself went flying at Glasgow Airport.

Before we went up in the air, we watched a safety video showing us what to do in the unlikely event of an emergency. At the start, it shows you the fantastic fast jets like the Harrier and the Tornado, and then shows you the Grob Tutor which we fly. It looked boring by comparison.

First to fly was Cdt Hawthorne, then Cdt Kayani and then Myself and Cpl Finnie.

When it was my turn I went into the store room and was fitted out with a flying suit, parachute and helmet with mic. In the aircraft, disaster struck, my mic didn’t seem to be working. So the pilot asked me to speak into it to check, so I’m sitting there in the aircraft going, “lalalala, hello, hello, lalalala” Sadly, I had to go all the way back into the building to get a new helmet.

We taxied to the runway and then took off. We flew to about 6,000 feet, levelled out, and then I was given control. I completed some turns and then came to the best bit, aerobatics. The pilot asked what I wanted to do so I said a loop. He put then engine to full power and went for it. We did another one, then a barrel roll and a stall turn. By this time my stomach was somewhere back at 6,000 feet. I felt really sick and so we headed back to the airport.

Once there, I felt much better. When Cdt Kayani came back he said he did a really advanced move called a Cuban 8. He thought he was all cool, but actually he had been sick everywhere (LOL). The day was excellent!

Rock-climbing

By Cdt Abass Kayani

We all met at the Glasgow Climbing Centre about 6pm. Our group consisted of the CO, myself, Cpl Finnie, Cdt Hastie, Cdt Skelly and Cdt Kelly.

Firstly we got our climbing shoes, helmets and safety harnesses on. Then we tried the practice wall before venturing out to the main climbing walls. It was a little scary when you get to the top because when you look down, everyone looks very small!

Cpl Finnie, Cdt Hastie and myself were the best climbers, I was proud because I bet Cpl Finnie!

Overall it was amazing and I would definitely recommend it to anyone. I just can’t wait to go next time!
