ATC Cross Country

By Cdt Steven Fleming

I went along to ‘wing’ cross-country  last year along with 2175 cadets. It was an early morning star, we met down at the squadron round about 7.30. As we arrived down at Pollock country park we down a warm-up to get our muscles pumping.

When we got changed and warmed up fully the races were to begin. We where all lined up at the start line there was shouting and cheering then it went silent, then ‘BANG’ it had started! I was going up and down hills and running round football pitches and over taking people from other squadrons but I really wanted to come in  a good position. On the last lap I sprinted all the way round the course. After all my hard work and effort I came in second. At the presentation my name got called out to get my silver medal off of Squadron Leader Paterson.

I had been told in a month or so that I was to go to ‘region’ cross-country. When that day came I had to travel all the way up to Livingston with cadet Farmer to compete, where I came in 3rd place. I was then selected to attend the ATC cross country which was a fantastic opportunity as I haven't been in cadets that long. I had a great time and came in at a respectable 21st place for my first attempt. Hopefully, I'll get the chance to compete at this level again.

Go Karting

By CI Gladwell

On the 19th May the squadron attended go karting at Scotkart in Clydebank; the night was a complete success with everyone getting a few goes on the track.  The cadets and staff were given an introduction and safety before taking to the track.  Competition on the course was fierce especially between cadets and NCOs.  Cpl Finnie was clearly the show off, getting round the track in 27.52 seconds!  The triumphant Cpl Finnie enjoyed the day so much he could remember his lap time two weeks later.  Many cadets commented on how ridiculous they looked wearing the safety overalls; ‘not at all’ I said (trying not to laugh).

Overall I think the day went brilliantly, all the cadets had fun and all wanted to go again. I would like to thank Mr Kayani and Mr Hastie for helping out with transport; nice to see parents getting involved with activities!  We are hoping to see more of these types of activity in the future showing off our motto ‘Venture Adventure’.
