MacPherson Awards Evening

2175 (Rolls-Royce) Squadron held their annual “MacPherson Awards” ceremony at Our Lady & St George’s Chapel Hall on the 19th of December 2004. The awards are given to the most deserving cadets who have demonstrated their abilities throughout the past year. The evening is the highlight of the calendar for the cadets who are rewarded for their dedication, skills and achievements in areas such as sports, drill, leadership and training.

This year’s ceremony was especially important as it was the first without Mr Campbell McPherson, who donated the awards, and the inspiration for the awards, Flt Lt Bill McConnell RAF VR(T). Sadly, these two great men passed away this year, however, their spirit will live on in the squadron through these awards and the cadets who will receive them each year.

Flt Lt McConnell was also awarded the McConnell trophy on the night, which was collected by his family, for his dedication to and many successes at the squadron. The McConnell Trophy was donated to the squadron by Flt Lt McConnell for those who had served the squadron with the utmost dedication and brought great pride and success to themselves and the squadron. Flt Lt McConnell was the Commanding Officer at one of the squadrons most successful times, due entirely to his personality and leadership. He was responsible for building the squadrons’ new premises, our rifle range and a museum to commemorate the achievements of the 602 (City of Glasgow) Squadron RAuxAF (Royal Auxiliary Air Force).

The event was attended by Mrs Ann McConnell and Brian McConnell, Mr Ian McDonald, representing Rolls-Royce, Wing Commander McIver (Retired), and Mr Peter Sherard from the Rolls-Royce Heritage Trust, as well as Mr Brian Hastie from Lourdes Secondary School and the cadets’ parents and families.

The evening was hosted by Flight Lieutenant Graham Short who said, “I would like to thank the cadets of 2175 (Rolls-Royce) Squadron for their hard work and achievements over the past year. They are a credit to themselves, their parents and the squadron, showing a fine example to the young people of this area of what they can achieve in life.”

The most coveted trophy among the cadets is the “Cadet of the Year” Trophy, which this year was awarded to Cpl Hussain Kayani, who also won the Senior Training Trophy and the JNCO (Junior Non Commissioned Officer) Cup. Hussain has been a cadet with the squadron for over 3 years, achieving a Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, a Level 3 Gliding Induction Course and passes with credit in all his exams during his time as an air cadet. He is currently training for Staff Cadet and his Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. He achieved 8 Standard Grades at Grade 1 this year and is now studying for his Highers. He hopes to serve in the RAF as a doctor.

This year held double success for the Kayani family with Hussain’s brother, Zain winning the “Recruit of the Year” trophy.

The squadron is now looking forward to another very successful year in 2005.

BELA

The cadets from 2175 (Rolls-Royce) Squadron will be able to enjoy many more outward bound activities in 2005, thanks to two of their instructors, Pilot Officer Suzanne Callan and Cadet Warrant Officer Bobby Hastie.

The two instructors have recently been awarded their Basic Expedition Leaders Awards (BELA) from the British Sports Trust, after 6 months of training, assessment and voluntary experience. With these new qualifications, the squadron will be able to run their own adventure training camps and take part in numerous hill walks and map reading exercises.

The six month course encompassed navigation, camp craft, leadership, first aid and health & safety training as well as three weekends camping outdoors. The course was run by Flight Lieutenant Dave Astin RAF VR(T), the Adventure Training Officer of Glasgow & West of Scotland Wing ATC. Plt Off Callan said of the award, “The Basic Expedition Leaders Award is a nationally recognised qualification which will greatly benefit the Air Cadets. We were encouraged to take part in the scheme in order to pass on the experience and fun times we had with the squadron in gaining our Silver Duke of Edinburgh Awards.”

These two awards are the first BELA qualifications the squadron has achieved so far; however three more instructors have been inspired enough by these achievements to also enter the scheme. So, hopefully the squadron will have 5 awards by the end of this year.

Remembrance Sunday

CADETS from 2175 (Rolls-Royce) Squadron, Air Training Corps, paraded today to remember those who have fallen in conflicts around the world. The air cadets completed their annual march past from the Royal British Legion to the Cenotaph in Paisley town. There, along with Wendy Alexander MSP, Douglas Alexander MP, Provost Ronnie Burns and representatives from the Territorial Army, Sea Cadets, Army Cadets, St Andrews ambulance and many military veterans and their families, they laid a wreath and observed a two minute silence.

The cadets were a credit to themselves, performing their drill manoeuvres with precision and their uniforms were impeccable. A fact not lost on the large crowd who had gathered to watch. Their Commanding Officer, Flight Lieutenant Graham Short RAF VR(T) praised the youngsters for their turnout, “Today, it was important to remember those who gave their lives in conflict and those who still risk their lives today. It was fantastic to see so many young people give up their time to remember them.”

At 1pm, the squadron assembled at the graveside of Senior Aircraftsman John Baxter, an ex-cadet of the squadron who was killed by an IRA car bomb in Nieuw Bergen, Holland. The 21 year old served in Number 1 squadron of the RAF Regiment until his death on the 1st of May 1988. The service at Cardonald Cemetery was attended by his family who expressed their gratitude that John remains in our thoughts each year.
